BIOLOGY

The biology section of the Science Department caters for 225 pupils in 5th and 6th year at higher and ordinary levels. There are 100 TY pupils taking Biology.

There is an average class size of 24 with 5 teachers instructing 13 classes.

All students take part in scheduled practical work.

CHEMISTRY
 

The chemistry section of the science department caters for 107 pupils in the senior cycle (at higher and ordinary levels), preparing them for the Leaving Certificate.
There is an average class size of 18 with 2 teachers instructing 6 classes.
All students take part in scheduled practical work.
The Leaving Certificate chemistry syllabus includes 28 mandatory practicals at higher level.

HOME ECONOMICS
 

83 pupils take Home Economics (Social & Scientific) at senior level in preparation for the Leaving Certificate.
There is an average class size of 14 with 1 teacher instructing 6 classes.
All students take part in scheduled practical work.
There is also a Food Preparation Module which all students in the College take during Transition Year (4th Year)

PHYSICS
 

The physics section of the science department caters for 156 pupils in the senior cycle (at higher and ordinary levels), preparing them for the Leaving Certificate.
There is an average class size of 19 with 5 teachers instructing 8 classes.
All students take part in scheduled practical work. There is also a strong emphasis on using modern teaching methodologies in the department:
Data projectors and computers are fully utilised in each lab, as well as datalogging equipment to do many of the class experiments at Senior level. Each 5th & 6th year student is given a unique resource cd containing detailed course notes, instructions for experiments, applets and an interactive syllabus.

AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE (New)
 

This is the first year that Ag Science has been offered as a subject in the school. There are currently 24 5th year pupils taking Ag Science.

JUNIOR SCIENCE
 

390 pupils at Blackrock College do science in the Junior cycle, in preparation for the Junior Certificate.

There are 9 teachers instructing 18 classes

All students take part in scheduled practical work.

FACILITIES
 

The science department at Blackrock College has a total of eight labs dedicated to the sciences. Each lab is well maintained with modern equipment, which is updated annually.
There are also ten computers located in the labs, solely serving the science department. These are used for interfacing with equipment, datalogging with experiments and simulations. They can also access related websites on the Internet.
